  10.        Netscape has a list of known problems in their online
  11.        release notes, please refer to those release notes for

  16.        Netscape also posts a list of currently known Security
  17.        issues dealing with the browser.  The URL for that

  20.        SGI has implemented the workaround for the "MIME Type Buffer
  21.        Overflow Vulnerability" so if you encounter a web page with
  22.        a plugin you don't already have installed you will get an
  23.        error message rather than a dialog asking whether you wish
  24.        to download the plugin.  When clicking OK on that dialog you
  25.        would have been sent to a site specified in the EMBED tag on
  26.        the page for downloading that plugin.  That dialog will no
  27.        longer appear but the error dialog will specify the content
  28.        type for the plugin.  You can go to Netscape's plugin site
  29.        to locate and download a copy of the plugin you need,
  30.        assuming one is available for IRIX.  The URL for Netscape's

  34.        Other problems that we have found specific to the SGI
  35.        release that may also exist in other releases are as
  36.        follows:

  38.           +o When netscape is started automatically by the desktop
  39.             via session management, the fonts in java applets may
  40.             become unreadable.  Quitting and restarting netscape
  41.             will fix the problem. Or you can define the environment
  42.             variable MOZILLA_HOME to be /var/netscape/communicator
  43.             in your login initialization.

  45.           +o The SGI customized mailcap and mime.types files are not
  46.             read by this release of the browser so certain IRIX
  47.             specific programs won't automatically launch when the
  48.             web server sends that file.  To workaround this problem
  49.             do the following:

  57.             disk cache by setting the cache size to zero, Java,
  58.             JavaScript, and Plugins all need local cache files in

  75.             cause the browser to crash periodically when running.
  76.             The workaround is simply to not specify a zero size
  77.             disk and/or memory cache, a one meg cache is enough to
  78.             work around this problem.

  80.           +o When launching multiple instances of netscape from the
  81.             same user account on a single machine you will get a
  82.             dialog box telling you that a lock file exists.  If you
  83.             ignore this dialog box then you won't be able to save
  84.             anything to the disk cache and plugins will not
  85.             function properly.  The proper thing to do is to create
  86.             a new browser window by using the "File->New->Navigator
  87.             Window" menu item.
  88.  
  89.           +o Many of the shortcuts do not work like CTRL-F (for Find
  90.             in Page) though they do work off the menu bar.

  92.           +o Due to some problems in the cache, some HTML pages may
  93.             not display properly.  To fix the display try hitting
  94.             the "Reload" button or hold down the "Shift-key" and
  95.             press the "Reload" button to force the reload from the
  96.             server.  Usually this will cause the page to display
  97.             properly.

  99.           +o The "Guide" menu and several other buttons are
  100.             initialized to access the most current version of these
  101.             documents from Netscape Communications Corporation's
  102.             World Wide Web site.  If you can not access these
  103.             sites, make sure that you are not sitting behind a
  104.             firewall.  Contact your systems administrator for more
  105.             information on firewalls and how to configure the
  106.             browser to get thru the firewall.  If your machine is
  107.             directly connected to the Internet, then this will not
  108.             be a problem for you.

  110.           +o If your system is configured for a Japanese environment
  111.             the Xt text entry widget may not function properly.
  112.             Try adding the following to your .Xdefaults or
  113.             Xresources file to work around this problem:

  118.             movie and it brings up a save dialog, make sure that
  119.             your system preferences for the location of the mailcap
  120.             and mime.types files are the correct ones.  Very old
  121.             Netscape Navigator beta images available on the network
  122.             saved preferences for the location of the mailcap and
  123.             mime.types files as "/usr/local/lib/mosaic".  This is
  124.             the incorrect location and will cause several players

  140.             not to run properly.  User's must verify that the
  141.             system defaults for the mailcap and mime.types files
  142.             are pointing to "/var/netscape/communicator".  Making
  143.             this change will most likely cause the player to
  144.             function properly.

  146.           +o If when viewing images using the external imgview
  147.             viewer you get an error dialog saying it can't open a
  148.             file "-nofork" then you have an older version of the
  149.             ImageTools.  You will need to up upgrade to IL version
  150.             3.1 or later.  This product is available on SGI's
  151.             software download site on the web.

  153.           +o Navigator Lite still requires that the Java JIT DSO be
  154.             installed in /usr/local.  It is the last remaining file
  155.             that gets installed in that location.
  156.  
  157.           +o There are some cases of DNS lookup when the separate
  158.             dns_helper application isn't used.  In these cases a
  159.             failed DNS lookup will hang the rest of the application
  160.             waiting for a timeout from the lookup.

  162.           +o Navigator Lite is not designed to run multiple
  163.             instances of the browser for a single user due to lock
  164.             contention with the bookmarks file, cache, and several
  165.             other databases.  It's best to run a single instance
  166.             then pop up new browsers from within that instance
  167.             using CTRL-N.
  168.  
  169.           +o When mouse dragging over the pulldown bookmarks menu,
  170.             the line separators will sometimes vanish and repaint
  171.             themselves.
  172.  
  173.           +o If the user's identity doesn't match the user's
  174.             personal address book card, then the settings on the
  175.             address book card aren't remembered.
  176.  
  177.           +o When saving the bookmarks from the bookmark menu
  178.             sometimes the UID and GID for the created file are
  179.             bogus id's.

  181.           +o If your ~/.netscape/preferences.js file becomes
  182.             corrupted then Navigator Lite may crash on startup.
  183.             Look at that file and verify that all directives are on
  184.             a single line with no newlines in any ()'s.

  186.           +o Some Netscape plugins may cause corruption of the
  187.             $HOME/.netscape/plugin-list.  Look at the URL
  188.             about:plugins to see which plugin might have corrupted
  189.             the plugin list.  To workaround the problem, try
  190.             removing the plugin and the $HOME/.netscape/plugin-

  220.           +o This release includes only the Simplified Chinese
  221.             version. Traditional Chinese version is not included
  222.             and the US version running on Traditional Chinese
  223.             WorldView is not supported.

  225.           +o This release of Netscape Navigator Lite cannot handle
  226.             javascript-enabled scrolling of Chinese and Korean
  227.             characters.  On web sites with such scrolling Chinese
  228.             or Korean text, Netscape will generate continuous error
  229.             messages blocking the normal use of the browser.

  231.           +o Korean and Chinese characters on Microsoft FrontPage-
  232.             generated html pages do not always show up properly in
  233.             Netscape Navigator browser.
